With the feast of Palm Sunday — the Lord’s Entry, or the triumphal entry of our Lord into Jerusalem — we step into Holy Week, the week that ends with Easter, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The events that took place during this remarkable week hold the central place in the four Gospels. In fact, about a third of the Gospels describe scenes and record the words and parables that Jesus spoke during this very week. It was in this Great Week that God accomplished our salvation.
Although every single day of this week is great, three main moments clearly stand out within it:
- The triumphal entry into Jerusalem
- The crucifixion
- The resurrection
Each of these three main moments of Holy Week reveals a distinct, characteristic feature of the very person of our Lord. Entering Jerusalem triumphantly, He reveals Himself as King and the Anointed of God. On the cross He is the Redeemer and the Lamb of God, who gives Himself up for our sins. The resurrection proves that He is the Son of God. In three of the services we will hold during this Great Week, we will dwell on these three chief titles of the Lord Jesus Christ: God’s Anointed, the Lamb of God, and the Son of God.
